How Can Smart Card Features Protect Your Workplace?

In the modern era, where every device or system you own – from phones to watches and thermostats – is smart, why should your ID card system be left behind? An efficient ID card system is key to a safe and secure working environment.

A smart card, also known as an integrated circuit card, is a physical, electronic authorization device that processes information and controls access to a resource. It is typically a plastic card with an embedded integrated circuit chip that enhances privacy protection. The right features in a smart card enable it to do more than just open doors.

Features of Smart Card

Employee Authentication

Smart cards are equipped with the technology to validate users or applications and authenticate individuals who want to gain access to a particular area. These features protect privacy by ensuring that the card used has appropriate access to the data or area the user is attempting to access or enter.

This authentication process can be achieved through a proximity access card that employers can provide employees access to a building or room. A proximity card uses a chip embedded within the card to identify employees. Your facility can install a proximity card reader to grant access to your facility or capture information.

Encryption Capabilities

Many smart cards offer a diverse set of encryption capabilities to protect privacy. This includes key generation, secure key storage, and digital signing. The encrypted information can be read with the appropriate equipment, such as an ID card reader or mobile phone.

According to the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA), encryption is the most obvious way to protect the sensitive information stored on the card. Although this study specifically refers to a European eID card, the purpose of encryption remains the same for all ID cards with this feature, regardless of the region. Most of the confidential information embedded in the card is in encrypted data blocks. The reader and the card typically share a secret key which the reader software might derive from a unique identification number of the card and secret system key.

Secure Communication

Smart cards enable secure communication between the card and the reader. This can be helpful when issuing ID cards, as it allows the reader to identify authorized employees, making granting or denying access to a building or room easier. This feature allows smart cards to send and securely receive data, reducing the risk of data breaches.

Biometric Matching Functions

Biometric functions on an ID card are a form of identification that recognizes and analyzes a card owner based on their physical and behavioral traits. This may include fingerprints, eye retina, voice recognition, or facial patterns. Most smart cards include functions that securely store biometric templates to perform matching functions. This feature can enhance privacy in workplaces that use biometrics for identification. For example, if your workplace stores fingerprints on smart cards, the sign-on system will likely be more secure and efficient.

A smart card contains several features to upgrade security at your workplace to protect your employees, confidential data, and visitors. It’s important to understand the value of the different features to determine how a smart card can add value to your organization.
