A Story Within a Story
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is set at East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, the very place in which, in the realm of the story, the High School Musical movie was filmed. The school’s new drama teacher, Miss Jenn, decides to pay tribute to the movie by involving the students in a theater production of High School Musical. The stage is set.
As the students, including Nini Salazar-Roberts and Ricky Bowen, take their parts in the musical, they have to deal with relationship issues on many levels, including dating, friendship and rivalry. Along the way, they grow in maturity and learn more and more about becoming young adults.
In the series’ second season, the students turn their attention to the spring musical, Beauty and the Beast, and the theater competition surrounding it. The students meet new challenges as they pursue this new story within a story.
The series, which is produced by Tim Federle, presents many relatable characters, and viewers easily get caught up into their struggles and triumphs. At various points in each episode, the characters directly address viewers, talking about their thoughts and emotions and questions. These breaks in the action help viewers better grasp the characters’ perspectives and come to know them as people, each with their own personalities and quirks.
Viewers enjoy watching as Nini comes out of her shell, deals with relationships and copes with her lead role in the musical. Ricky, in turn, has to grapple with family difficulties and his feelings for Nini, which he has trouble expressing. Even the adults, including Miss Jenn, experience their own emotional hangups, and older viewers can easily relate to them.
