Effective Plumbing System Care Tips to Know

1. Clean the Drains Regularly

It’s not uncommon for drains to become clogged. You’ll notice when this happens because they’ll start to drain slower than usual. It’s important to clean the drains on a regular basis to remove anything causing the clog and keep the drains working as they should.

A good rule of thumb is to clean the drains once a month as a preventative. Use an enzyme-based cleaner or natural drain cleaner rather than a chemical-based one. Chemicals can damage the drains.

Baking soda and white vinegar will help clear and clogs. You’ll leave the mixture for about 15 minutes before rinsing with hot water.

2. Avoid Flushing Certain Items

The only items you want to flush down the toilets are human waste and toilet paper. Even wipe products that claim to be flushable can take much longer to break down than toilet paper. In time, these wipes will clog the pipes.

Avoid flushing other items as well such as paper towels, cat litter, feminine hygiene products, and anything else that’s not toilet paper.

3. Prevent Grease and Oil in Drains

Grease and oil might seem like an easy rinse down the drain. However, once the oil or grease has time to cool, it’ll turn into a gooey solid. This solid will quickly clog your kitchen drains.

Anything else that goes down the drains will get stuck in the gooey mess and create problems. This is true even for your garbage disposal. Instead, use a paper towel to soak up the oil or grease and place it in the trash can.

4. Use Your Garbage Disposal Correctly

Speaking of garbage disposals, it’s best to know what can and can’t be placed down the disposal to ensure proper use. There are many items that you think are safe to place down the garbage disposal but aren’t. A few items that should never go down your garbage disposal are as follows: coffee grounds, pasta, bones, oatmeal, trash, fruit pits, and more.

Your garbage disposal should only be used for the disposal of small crumbs that fall off your dishes when rinsing them off before washing.

5. Install a Filtration System

Another tip to create a healthy plumbing system is to install a filtration system. A hard water filter that doesn’t use salt, potassium, or chemicals to soften the water is best. You can prevent limescale from forming and have peace of mind knowing your water is healthy and clean.

Install a filtration system that filters the water for the entire house, which will prevent corrosion and costly repairs for the entire plumbing system.
